๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™–๐™œ๐™–๐™ง,1 ๐™๐™š๐™—,The driver, who was behind the wheel of an ill-fated sumo vehicle which plunged into deep gorge in Uri and claimed lives of ten passengers, was challaned nine times in the past for overloading, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Rural Kashmir Ravinder Paul Singh on Thursday.

SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir in an exclusive interview with the news agency talked about a wide array of traffic issues and said that the licence of the driver, who had carried passengers beyond the seating capacity in his vehicle, was already cancelled.

Expressing deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident, he said that the driver was issued challans nine times in the past for overloading, which did not deter him from committing the violation, partly involved in claiming the lives of ten passengers.

To further tighten the clampdown, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir said that non-registered sumo stands would not be allowed to operate henceforth in areas under his remit.

โ€œIt is very saddening that some drivers are flouting the traffic rules despite awareness programmes being conducted from time to time. In spite of taking stern measures against the erring drivers, indulging in traffic negligence by them is worrisome,โ€ he said.

He also said that 1,18,337 drivers were issued challans for overloading in 2023 and stepped up traffic awareness drives to curb violations.

Besides, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir said that 41,750 riders and 7,545 drivers were fined for not wearing helmets and driving without High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), respectively.

Meanwhile, Singh requested the passengers not to travel in overloaded vehicles, which is fraught with risks.
